Why Are Some Esports Careers Ending So Early? | Overwatch League Player Retirement

When it comes to iconic pro players who have once graced the Overwatch League stage only to exit the competitive scene in less than a year’s time into their career, the likes of Dafran, Seagull, EFFECT, and Miro are just a few of a growing list of names that immediately come to mind.

In today’s video, we take a look at various cases of OWL players who have chosen to retire and the factors that have motivated them to do so in order to gain a better understanding of what can be done to promote career longevity.

In esports, it is common to see players retire at an early age due to a variety of factors ranging from a lack of career stability prompting some to return to school to simply getting burnt out from the lifestyle and transition into more of a coach/analyst role.

The Overwatch League may only be in its second season, but there is already a growing list of pro players who have hung up their mantle to focus on other pursuits ranging from growing their personal brands as streamers to giving other esports titles like APEX a shot.
