Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Dev Apologizes For Massive Update File Size For Season 2

The big new Season 2 update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has arrived. It adds lots of new content, including a new version of the much-loved Rust map from Modern Warfare 2, so it was always expected to carry a hefty file size. But few could have imagined just how large the file size was, as it runs up to 100GB depending on your platform. Fans quickly and passionately expressed their disappointment over this, as it could take hours to download.

Developer Infinity Ward has now commented on the massive file size. Production director Paul Haile apologized on Twitter for the size of the update. He said this Season 2 update is a unique situation that will actually decrease the file size of the game overall.

That’s because this update includes new asset packs that reduce the overall size of the game by “a little” when all is said and done. Additionally, this update includes changes that tweak the data files to offer “better overall” disk-space management. Future updates for Modern Warfare should not be as big as Season 2, Haile said.

Additionally, a future update for Modern Warfare will allow players to choose which DLC packs to install or delete to free up space. This is similar to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which allows players to pick and choose which content they want to download so as to keep the overall file size more management. This new DLC management system for Modern Warfare will only be available on console, Haile said.

“I’m very conscious of the overall size of MW and we’re doing what we can to minimize this for everyone. Thanks!” he said.

The Modern Warfare Season 2 update includes two new multiplayer maps (Rust and Atlas Superstore), a new Ground War map (Zhokov Boneyard), and new Gunfight maps. Gunfight Tournaments and Call of Duty League Ruleset playlists are also added, along with two more weapons (GRAU 5.56 and Striker 45) and the new operator, Simon “Ghost” Riley.

The maps and weapons are free for all players, but Ghost and a series of cosmetic rewards and XP tokens are only for premium Battle Pass tiers. You can also purchase your way into the Battle Pass Bundle and get 20 Tier skips as well.
