Image credit: Overwatch League Josh Cella, Head of Global Partnerships for Activision Blizzard Esports discussed the partnership in a release: “Xfinity is a world-class brand, and we’re excited to have them be a major part of our 2019 Grand Finals. We worked in conjunction with Twitch to create a customized postseason opportunity for Xfinity, engaging fans experiencing the excitement of the finals both onsite as well as digitally. We are thrilled to have them sponsor the most exciting portion of our season, as they are committed to providing fast, safe, and reliable internet for all gamers.” The playoffs for the 2019 season will kick off on August 30th in Los Angeles, leading to the grand finals on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. $1.7 million (£1.4 million) is up for grabs in total, with the winning team taking home $1.1 million (£899,156). Matt Lederer, Vice President of Brand Partnerships at Comcast also commented: “We’re excited to be sponsoring the Overwatch League’s 2019 Grand Finals in our hometown of Philadelphia. We know the importance of a fast and reliable internet connection for online gaming, and we look forward to showing gamers and fans how the speed and capabilities of Xfinity Internet can maximize their esports experience.” Esports Insider says: Comcast is already involved in the Overwatch League through its ownership of Philadelphia Fusion so this isn’t the most shocking development. Regardless, it’s hard to judge exactly how effective this deal will be without seeing it in action but we’re sure plenty of eyes will be on the various streams throughout.
