PGL has partnered with The Coalition to operate three major events that lead into a World Championship, as well as a number of regional events. The first esports event to take place on the title, Gears 5 ELEAGUE Invitational, was hosted on July 13-14th. Each of the three major events in the upcoming season will be open to all teams, meaning both professional and amateur teams can compete. Teams from North America, Central America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and newly-added region South America will all be “awarded with travel coverage to major international events.” There will also be an online Pro League that includes teams from North America, Central America, and Europe. Those who compete in the Pro League won’t be able to compete in regional ladders or weekly online tournaments, providing an opportunity for less-abled teams to make a name for themselves. TOX Gaming, a Halo organisation that temporarily entered Gears esports by picking up the former OpTic Gaming roster, won the aforementioned ELEAGUE Invitational. During Gears of War 4, the team won 17 out of 19 events that were hosted throughout the competitive season. Esports Insider says: The gameplay and overall production at the first Gears 5 seemed solid, but we feel as if drastic measures need to be taken to thrust a Gears title into a new level of popularity in esports. Bringing in PGL is a decent move as it has good events in the past, but we’re fairly sure it’s not enough to help Gears 5 make waves in this industry.
