First we will talk about why you need coal, and then run over how exactly to get it.

About Coal

Coal is a crafting item. This means it hasn’t a lot of use on its own, but you can make useful things with it. Coal is one of the precursors to making steel, along with Iron. This means the following items all need coal to craft.

  • Steel Dagger
  • Steel Sword
  • Steel Axe
  • Steel Pickaxe
  • Steel Arrow
  • Steel Greatsword
  • Steel Shield
  • Brute Leggings
  • Brute Armor
  • Brute Helmet
  • Plasteel Dagger
  • Plasteel Sword
  • Plasteel Leggings
  • Plasteel Armor
  • Plasteel Helmet
  • Plasteel Staff
  • Plasteel Bow
  • Plasteel Shield
  • Plasteel Greatsword

Looks like you might need to find some, huh?

How To Get Coal

To get coal you need to find a coal vein. There’s one place to do this, though it can be a bit of a trek, and possibly not a safe one either.

You need to head to the Subjugation Stronghold. This is accessed through the Feeding Grounds, beyond the huge skeletal ribcage. The ‘tail’ end of the skeleton points towards its entrance. Head into the stronghold and avoid or fight the enemies there. We’d recommend avoiding them. Make your way all the way through.

Once you leave the Subjugation Stronghold, turn left and follow the path that runs along the wall of the stronghold. Eventually, it will branch off. You should eventually see a small hut and a campfire, keep running past these and follow the path to the nearest cliffside by the hut. You should see coal veins there that you’re free to mine for coal.
