Broken Ranks Is A Gritty MMORPG For Classic cRPG Fans

The funny thing about MMORPGs, is that despite the name, they often feel like a very different genre to the experience of a regular RPG. This is especially true where mobile MMORPGs are concerned, which are often nice and friendly-looking, and simplified to the point of offering to play for you. 

And if that’s your thing, then that’s no problem. But if you wish MMOs could be more like Tyranny, or Heroes Of Might And Magic, or Baldur’s Gate, then you will be interested to find that Broken Ranks just got a mobile release, because that’s exactly what the game sets out to do. 

What Is Broken Ranks?

Broken Ranks is a turn-based MMORPG set in a low fantasy world, the kingdom in chaos as an invading force spreads carnage across the land. You pick from one of seven classes, and set out to explore this dangerous world.

So, you might be wondering, how does turn-based MMO combat work? Will you be trapped in limbo if one of your party gets an unexpected phone call? Fortunately, no. The battle system works on a timer, as many tabletop games use to keep their fights flowing. You have ten seconds to make your choices. So, when it’s not your turn, you need to be planning your next one.

It also puts an emphasis on creating an interesting world, from its story to the quests that feel like real RPG objectives with stories behind them, rather than a list of wildlife you need to murder to advance. 

A Proven Track Record

While the game is new to mobile, it’s not new as such. The PC version has been live since 2022, and has been going strong since.

If you’ve already played, you’ll be delighted to find that the Android version has full cross-progression, so you can pick up where you left off, and go back again. 

How’s The Monetization?

Something we always have to check on with any of these things. The game is monetized with premium accounts, cosmetics, and a premium currency, called Platinum.

Interestingly, Platinum can be freely traded. This means that you can trade premium currency with other players for ordinary game currency or items, letting free-to-play types acquire it.
