Movie Tycoon: Film Studio Sim Lets You Build Your Hollywood Empire

Ever watched a movie and thought if you could run a studio better than the people who made the movie? Well, that experience is now available for you on mobile. A new film studio management sim called Movie Tycoon: Film Studio Sim is out now on Android. It comes from Spanish studio Blacksnow Games.

Movie Tycoon: Film Studio Sim starts in 1960 and takes you all the way to 2030!

You’re trying to build the most famous movie studio in Hollywood history while the entire industry changes around you. You start in the golden age of 1960, then work your way through five different eras of cinema as technology, distribution and audiences keep changing.

Making a movie is its own little puzzle. You pick the genre, theme and audience, then build a three-act script using story cards. After that, you have to figure out where the production budget actually matters, splitting it between things like acting, sets, stunts, atmosphere, sound and special effects.

You’re supposed to look back at how your movies performed and figure out what actually worked. Presumably you can’t just dump maximum money into everything. Meanwhile, the actors have careers that change over time, with actors rising, reaching their peak, fading and finally retiring.

Early on, you deal with hand-built sets, but eventually you move into CGI and motion capture. The industry goes from TV reruns and VHS to streaming, while local premieres turn into global blockbuster launches. There’s also film technology to research throughout the different eras, including the eventual move toward VR premieres.

Movie Tycoon: Film Studio Sim also has a Golden Cat. It’s the ultimate big award you’re chasing. Every year, the film awards hand out trophies across seven categories, so you can try to get nominations, collect statuettes and turn your little studio into a Hollywood legend.

Movie Tycoon: Film Studio Sim is available on the Google Play Store with a free trial. It lets you play the entire first studio for free. You can unlock the full game at $3.99 until September 23rd, after which it goes up to $4.99.
