Turn-Based Dungeon Crawler Legends of Amberland – RPG Is Out Now

It’s so heavily pixelated that it’s eligible to actually teleport you back to the 80s or 90s. Legends of Amberland is a classic old-school RPG that’s now on mobile, with the first game in the series, Legends of Amberland: The Forgotten Crown up for grabs. The rest of the Legends of Amberland series follows soon, too.

It’s really simple. It’s just about grabbing a bunch of weird heroes, walking around a big map, fighting monsters, and going on an actual adventure. It replicates the 90s western CRPGs that let you wander around, build a party, and smack some monsters around in turn-based combat.

The story starts when a royal wizard discovers a forgotten crown. The entire kingdom has forgotten the crown even existed because of a mysterious spell of forgetfulness. So, the wizard gathers a party of seven heroes and sends them out to find the crown and figure out who erased it from everyone’s memory.

So, you’re off on a light, heroic, fairy-tale adventure across a living open world. You can create and lead a squad of up to 7 heroes, either picking them yourself or using a pre-made party. You choose their classes, head out into a big non-linear overworld, and can take on quests in whatever order you want.

Legends of Amberland – RPG brings classic back

The game uses first-person, grid-based movement with 90-degree rotation and turn-based combat. Travel is quick, inventory management is painless, and there’s no endless repetitive grinding. There’s also an equipment encumbrance system as one of the more modern additions to the otherwise traditional mechanics.

The developer, Silver Lemur Games, originally built the game around that older style of RPG because there aren’t that many games like this anymore. The inspiration comes from games like Dungeon Master, Eye of The Beholder 2, Might & Magic 3-5, Crystals of Arborea, which was a less well-known prequel to the Ishar series, and the GoldBox games such as Champions of Krynn and Dark Queen of Krynn.

Legends of Amberland is now available on the Google Play Store for $9.99.
