Crunchyroll Adds 2D Fighting Game Baki Hanma to Its Android Vault

Baki Hanma: Blood Arena is now available on mobile, but through Crunchyroll. It’s a 2D action arcade fighting game based on the Baki universe, inspired by the Netflix anime series. The anime is based on Baki the Grappler, the Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Keisuke Itagaki.

The game puts you in the shoes of Baki Hanma himself. You have to work your way through some of the strongest and most terrifying martial artists around. It’s about pushing Baki to his physical limits, with the ultimate goal of standing across the arena from Yujiro Hanma.

It’s a 2D fighter with a retro arcade feel, taking some inspiration from Punch-Out!!-style action. You need to watch what your opponent is doing, notice their movements, find an opening and then actually make something happen before they smash your face in.

The combat in Baki Hanma: Blood Arena involves fast-paced 2D brawling, with dodging, blocking and striking. There’s a particular emphasis on perfect dodges, since getting them right can help you avoid some seriously nasty counter-attacks. You also have a Rage Meter that fills up during fights, and once it’s ready, you can throw out explosive special attacks inspired by the anime.

Baki Hanma: Blood Arena brings Itagaki’s distinctive art style

There are 12 unique opponents, with each fighter specialising in their own martial arts discipline. They use boxing, karate, kenpo and various underground martial arts techniques. There are also 5 different locations, all inspired by the Baki series. They include muddy underground fight clubs and more impressive tournament stages.

The whole progression is for Baki’s Son of Ogre legacy. Baki’s goal is to climb through the ranks and prove that he’s the real heir to the Hanma bloodline. That eventually leads to Yujiro Hanma waiting at the end for the final duel.
