The investment was announced on Tuesday 29 September, eight weeks after the report was signed on 1 August. Financial terms were not disclosed, leaving the size of NXTPLAY’s stake and the amount of new funding for Fusion unclear. Investment comes amid funding pressure Courtois and Vila founded NXTPLAY, whose portfolio includes French club Le Mans FC, Spain’s CD Extremadura and Belgium’s KRC Genk. The investment adds a prominent athlete to Fusion’s ownership group, but the announcement does not specify how much capital NXTPLAY is providing or what role the investors will have beyond their stakes. Thibaut Courtois The deal arrives as esports organisations continue to confront questions about funding and financial resilience. The wider investment landscape across esports includes both capital raises and persistent pressure to build sustainable business models. Fusion acquired Astralis in September 2025. Its operating subsidiary, Astralis CS ApS, reported a DKK 19.1 million ($2.9 million) net loss for 2025, negative equity of DKK 3.9 million ($591,000) and cash of DKK 97,633 ($14,800) at 31 December. Average full-time headcount fell from 18 to 11. Astralis CS ApS’s accounts said the company depended on additional liquidity. A 24 September company-register entry recorded a DKK 752.76 nominal capital increase, issued at 4,251 times nominal value. The transaction implies about DKK 3.2 million ($484,000) for roughly 2.4% of enlarged share capital. The register does not identify the subscriber. NXTPLAY is not listed among Fusion’s registered owners, and the register includes shareholders holding at least 5%. Financial pressure is not unique to Astralis: team owners across the sector have faced difficult choices over operating costs and sustainability, including those discussed by the Tundra Esports founder. What the accounts and announcement say Auditor BDO highlighted material uncertainty that may cast significant doubt on Astralis CS ApS’s ability to continue operating. Management said the company received a payment from Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund in April 2026 and expected a capital process during the third quarter, potentially alongside further EIFO loans. Negotiations had not been finalised when the report was signed on 1 August. The report also said a post-takeover review found that bookkeeping was not up to date and incorrect VAT returns had been filed; the company said it had corrected them. Fusion CEO Jonas Gundersen described Courtois and Vila’s investment as “a milestone moment for us.” Courtois, identified in the release as NXTPLAY co-founder and partner, said: “Astralis is a team I’ve known for some time. I like where the group is heading and the ambition to build something bigger around esports,” Astralis celebrates their victory at IEM Katowice 2019. Whether the investment can ease Astralis’s liquidity concerns remains an open question. It is not known whether the September capital increase was NXTPLAY’s investment or the full raise anticipated in the accounts, nor are the amount and terms of EIFO funding public. Fusion’s amended articles may also affect investor rights, but their terms have not been established. As esports teams pursue alternative monetisation strategies, Astralis’s next test is whether new capital can support a sustainable operation. Source link Facebook Twitter Email Pinterest
