Crunchyroll Adds Cat Mecha Metroidvania Gato Roboto to Its Android Vault

Crunchyroll: Gato Roboto is out on mobile. The cat-in-a-mech 2D Metroidvania originally came out in 2019, developed by American studio Doinksoft and published by Devolver Digital on PC. You’re a tiny cat with a heavily armoured mech suit, and you need to save your stranded captain on a hostile alien planet.

Kiki and her owner, Captain Gary, crash-land on an alien planet after a routine space patrol goes horribly wrong. Gary ends up trapped inside the wreckage of their spaceship, while the rest of the crew is incapacitated. And that leaves Kiki to handle the whole rescue mission herself!

You keep switching between Kiki and her chunky mechanical armour in Gato Roboto

Inside the mech, Kiki becomes a walking tank with multiple hit points, a gun, and heavy weaponry. She also gets micro-missiles for smashing through rock barriers and eventually abilities like a double jump and dash.

Outside the mech, Kiki can climb and jump off walls, swim through water, squeeze through tiny gaps and explore places that the bulky mech simply can’t reach. The catch is that she can’t damage enemies or use the mech’s abilities while she’s on foot, and she dies in a single hit. Oops!

The main adventure in Gato Roboto takes place inside an underground alien labyrinth belonging to a deep-space outpost. There are dozens of handcrafted environments. The areas include a high-tech lab, an underwater aqueduct system, a scorching heater core, and the planet’s ventilation system.

The route to the lab, which is the final area, is blocked until you deal with the aqueducts, heating system and ventilation system first. Along the way, you can uncover what happened at the outpost before Kiki arrived.

Gato Roboto uses a monochromatic 1-bit art style that’s heavily inspired by the classic Game Boy era. It’s deliberately simple and crunchy-looking, but you can find cassette tapes hidden around the map that unlock optional colour palettes.
