If you’re on the constant lookout for new word games, I have one for you. It’s Letter Pirate – A word game, now out on mobile. It’s like a mixture of Scrabble and Uno, except instead of just placing letters, you actually draw a line through them to make your words.

The game takes the making-words thing and adds in territory control, so you’re not just chasing points. You’re fighting over the board with your vocabulary, with the whole match happening on a 5×7 board. There, every word you spell grabs tiles for your side.

The goal is to capture more territory than the other player before the game ends. But be aware that your opponent can literally steal your tiles by using them in their own words. Meanwhile, you can use letters your opponent already placed to build longer words yourself.

The strategy in Letter Pirate – A word game isn’t about having a huge vocabulary. Timing matters, placement matters, and knowing when to attack is just as important as knowing a fancy word. You can wall off your territory by surrounding it with awkward letters that are harder to use, go for high-scoring words to build a lead, or save up for one massive word at the end that completely snatches victory away.

You also have to be careful not to leave useful letters sitting in the shared tray because your opponent can grab them for their own plans. There’s even the option to blow up the tray of letters at the right moment.

Whoever finishes with the longest word and the most captured tiles comes out on top. The board also includes different themes, including a pirate-themed board. The game is the work of Ancient Bison, a solo developer who left larger studios to make the game as a personal project.
