Story-Driven Adventure JRPG Meg’s Monster Launches on Android

Three years after releasing on PC, Meg’s Monster is now out on mobile. It’s been rebuilt around portrait mode and tap controls instead of the original PC setup. Developed and published by Odencat out of Japan, it’s an adventure RPG.

Meg’s Monster is Monsters, Inc., but not so straightforward

It focuses more on the story than grinding or complicated combat systems. It takes place in the Underworld, which is full of monsters and mutants who treat humans like breakfast food.

One of those monsters is a giant ogre named Roy, who couldn’t care less about eating people. While hanging around with his best friend Golan, he runs into a lost little girl named Meg.

After that, things go off the rails when they realise her crying can basically trigger the apocalypse. The sky turns blood red, and the ground starts shaking. So, the fate of their world depends on making sure the kid doesn’t burst into tears.

It’s an RPG, sure, but not where the player protects themselves. Meg’s Monster flips it around as Roy starts the game with 99,999 HP and is impossible to kill. But killing him isn’t what we want, right?

The problem is keeping Meg calm during battles. If she panics and starts crying, everybody loses. Combat ends up revolving around strange little mechanics and mini-games while Roy protects her and distracts her with toys she likes.

The game is heavily story-driven, with lots of dialogue, scenes, and scripted encounters instead of endless random fights. The Underworld is full of strange characters, optional side events, and even chances to befriend enemies after fighting them.

At the end of the day, it’s just Roy trying to help Meg get home to her mother, while simultaneously dealing with mysteries in the Underworld. The game keeps bouncing between goofy moments and emotional ones. And visually, it’s a colourful pixel delight!

Meg’s Monster is available on the Google Play Store for free. The mobile version also includes the Lost Memories DLC.
