How To Play PETAPETA – A Beginner’s Guide

Let’s run over the basics, and what you need to do. Then we’ll go into more detail about it in the game.

The objective of PETAPETA is to explore a spooky, haunted building, and try to exorcise the horrible creature that stalks the corridors… before it exorcises you… In the sense that your soul will be leaving your body if the creature finds you. No pressure.

Controls

The controls in PETAPETA are simple enough.

  • WASD – Move
  • E – Interact
  • LMD – Use Item
  • Shift – Run
  • 1-9 – Equipment Select From Hotbar

Objectives

As you start each floor, a screen will appear telling you what you need to do to complete the exorcism ritual. This will start pretty simply. For example:

  • Find the key.
  • Find the box.

Usually, opening the box is the end of the sequence before the actual exorcism part. (We’ll explain that in detail further on.)

As the levels continue, you’ll get more steps added to the process, so it becomes more complicated.

The Levels

The levels resemble dark hallways in an older Japanese building, with rooms on either side behind sliding doors. You’ll find the items for the objectives inside these rooms. Some items, like the box, you will need to come back to, so try to remember the location if you find it.

You can search some items inside rooms for coins, like cushions, and drawers.

Some rooms may have wardrobes in, which you can use as hiding places. It’s a good idea to make a mental note of where these are, for reasons detailed in the next section.

The Monster

If you hear some unsettling noises, and the screen begins to turn red and staticky, that’s your cue to hide! PETAPETA, the evil spirit of the hotel, patrols the hallways looking for anyone who enters its line of sight. Just being in a room won’t save you; you need to hide in a wardrobe until the danger passes.

You should know it’s safe to come out when you hear the scary noises getting quieter again.

Exorcising The Monster

When you can open the box hidden somewhere in the level, you finally get a way to fight back against the monster. This is a piece of paper with powerful magic called an ofuda. Here’s how you use it once you have it.

  • Take the ofuda from the box.
  • Equip it and step into the corridor. You should hear your enemy approaching.
  • Quickly set the ofuda down on the floor of the hallway.
  • Step back and watch the fireworks. Once the monster passes over the ofuda, that’s it for them.

Items

There are a few different items that can help you out. You can find some of them via the Daily Rewards in the lobby.

  • Revive – This will bring you back if you fall prey to Petapeta.
  • Ongiri – Gives extra stamina for 30 minutes. Four different sizes.
  • Sneakers – Increases your dash speed.
  • Spirit Bell – Rings when you get near key times.
  • Party Popper – Stops Petapeta moving. Three different strengths.
  • Spray Paint – Marks walls, useful for helping you find your way around.
