Dead Rails Scorched Earth Challenge Guide

What Is Scorched Earth?

In Dead Rails, Scorched Earth is two things. Firstly, it’s a new challenge. Second, it’s a name game mode that you need to complete a run of to win the challenge.

So, what makes the game mode different? It’s fire. No, we don’t mean it’s great. Nearly everything is on fire. Or, to be more specific:

  • The weather during the day is nearly constantly raining kerosene.
  • Enemies have a 25% chance to spawn on fire. These enemies won’t die from this condition, but they can set you on fire when they touch you… And you’re probably covered in kerosene. Oh dear.
  • Zombie nights will spawn flaming zombies.
  • Before you get any ideas, no, you can’t use the now fire-immune Arsonist. This class is banned in Scorched Earth mode.

If you can survive the ordeal and reach the bridge, you’ll get 30 Bonds.

Scorched Earth Tips

So, how should you tackle it? Here are a few tips we’ve come up with to help you along.

  • The easiest way to survive the fiery enemies in Scorched Earth is… just to not let any get close enough to set you on fire.
  • There are several classes (aside from Arsonist) that can make things easier.
    • The Vampire’s speed makes it much easier to avoid flaming enemies.
    • Similarly, the Cowboy’s horse gives you a good advantage when it comes to staying away from the fire.
  • Avoid the big structures. The challenge run isn’t the time to raid the Castle, or go into the Sterling Mines. Just focus on meeting your main goal.
  • The burning thing also affects wild horses, though they’re not aggressive. We don’t recommend trying to tame them, though.
  • All the enemies that spawn on fire are immune to fire damage.
