Nevada regulators approve betting on ESL Pro League

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has approved betting on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s ESL Pro League Season 11: North America in three wager types.

With this ruling, regulators will allow all licensed bookmakers in Nevada to post and accept wagers on the tournament, under specific conditions. The Nevada Gaming Control Board has approved wager types for: head to head, winner of each match, and overall season winner.

Those licensed bookmakers opting to offer wagers on ESL Pro League Season 11: North America must notify the Enforcement Division via email and halt the acceptance of bets prior to the start of each match.

Moreover, match results must be based on a “permissible source” that complies with respective regulations and all applicable audit procedures. Licensed Nevada sportsbooks are permitted to define match odds as long as governing rules surrounding the wagers are made available to the public. Additional markets that do not fall under the three approved wager types for the event will require a separate application and approval.

In November 2019, The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) gave approval for the state’s licensed sportsbooks to move forward with the acceptance of wagers for the League of Legends World Championship finals. Within the current framework of most United States regulatory guidelines, esports events can only be approved to accept wagers in one-off exemptions through an approval process.

Earlier this month, the Assembly Tourism, Gaming & the Arts Committee motioned and advanced a bill which would allow legal and permissible esports betting on a permanent basis. The bill, A637, has been moved into the hands of the Speaker for consideration.

Esports Insider says: Esports betting has seen significant advancement in the last several weeks possibly in connection to the cancellation of most traditional sports amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic. The approval at hand will give the US gambling market another taste of esports betting with one of CS:GO’s premier events, and with that, hopefully inching them closer to permitting wagers on esports on a full-time basis.
