Pushup RPG: Fitness Quest Is a Push-Up & Squat Counter Game

Pushup RPG: Fitness Quest is an indie mobile fitness game that’s now out on mobile. The gimmick is that your actual body is the controller. You prop up your phone, get into position, and you do push-ups or squats.

How does it all work?

Physical effort equals game progress in Pushup RPG: Fitness Quest. The concept is a lot closer to the kind of thing that makes exercise feel like an actual game instead of just counting reps until you’re done. The phone camera uses pose detection to count what you’re doing, and every completed rep turns into an attack against the in-game monsters.

The camera handles the counting during push-up and squat battles, so you don’t have to stop and manually enter every rep. And you don’t need a smartwatch or any other wearable either. The campaign has 48 foes spread across eight fantasy biomes, with victories handing out XP and loot.

Push-ups and squats are tracked separately in Pushup RPG: Fitness Quest. The camera can read both movements, and each one has its own records. Squats even get their own Free Training mode and their own world ladder.

The game even has a multiplayer option. You can challenge a friend to a live bout where both cameras are running, there’s one clock, and the game compares your counts. There’s also THE ARENA, where you can get matched against a stranger somewhere in the world.

If you’d rather compete against fixed opponents, there are six rivals at a fixed pace, starting with Forest Goblin and going all the way up to The Nightwyrm. That mode doesn’t need a network connection. You can check out the app on the Google Play Store.

What are your thoughts on it?

I’ll tell you mine. I feel like the privacy thing is the biggest hurdle here. While the devs of Pushup RPG: Fitness Quest have assured that the game is private by design, there are still some people (me) who might not be that open to the idea.

While you’re training, the camera feed exists only in memory and is discarded as it goes. Recording is also turned off by default. But privacy problems with fitness apps absolutely can happen, even without someone literally stealing camera footage. What do you think about it? Comment and let us know!
