Digital Adaptation of Tabletop Primer Take That Hill Launches on Android

Take That Hill has a digital version now, which is out on Android and PC. Hunted Cow Games and HexWar Games have brought this version of the tabletop wargame licensed from Fight Club International. It’s a hardcore military board game that launched its physical version in 2022.

Do you like hex-and-counter wargames?

They’re fun if you’re already into them. The original tabletop game was built as a primer for the genre. It gives players one focused problem they could learn in about twenty minutes. Also, it covers platoon-level tactical combat.

The mobile (and PC) version of Take That Hill brings all of that to you. You command an infantry platoon made up of three sections and a Platoon HQ. Your objective is to destroy an enemy section that’s been hastily dug in on a hill sitting 500 metres away.

The problem is that the entire stretch of ground between you and the hill is completely open. So, you can’t just sprint at the objective. The hill has to be taken using fire and manoeuvre. You’ll need to pin the defenders down with suppressing fire, move your troops while they’re covered, work your way into an assault position right next to the hill, and then launch the attack.

Take That Hill uses a simple IGO-UGO turn structure

It’s the classic alternating-turn system used in a huge number of commercial wargames. As you play, you’ll learn the core mechanics that show up across the genre. That includes alternating sides, action economy, dice-driven fire, line of fire, suppression, morale, and rally.

The base game keeps things intentionally simple. Four sections, one enemy, one hill. You get sixteen turns to complete the mission. If your combined turns plus hits reach 16, the attack collapses. Reach the hill within the first ten turns and you’ll earn a clean victory.

Make it there from turn eleven onward and the best result you can get is a draw. Every turn also cycles through four different phases to keep everything moving. If all of this excites you, grab Take That Hill from the Google Play Store for $19.99.
