This quiet, late-night café experience was first launched on PC and consoles in January 2020. The tile is developed by Indonesian indie studio Toge Productions. The presentation of Coffee Talk: Episode 1 draws heavily from 90’s anime and pixel art styles. All of that is paired with a lo-fi chillhop soundtrack composed by Andrew Jeremy. Together, all the elements make for a perfect, subdued and reflective atmosphere. What’s the story in Coffee Talk: Episode 1? It’s set in an alternative version of Seattle, Washington, a modern city where humans live alongside elves, orcs, succubi, mermaids, and other fantasy races. The narrative deals with everyday conversations inside a small coffee shop, where you play the barista. She’s actually the owner and sole employee of Coffee Talk. Over the course of two weeks, each in-game day acts as a vignette, introducing different patrons. They share their personal concerns, relationships, and perspectives while interacting with one another. Gameplay largely revolves around reading dialogue, consistent with its visual novel structure. But it’s periodically interrupted by a drink-making minigame. You combine ingredients to prepare beverages for customers, sometimes adding latte art. There’s also an in-game smartphone that you can use at any time. You browse social media profiles of characters, check drink recipes, read short fiction from a fictional newspaper, or change the music playing in the café.
