How To Play Dollhouse Bloodshed – A Walkthrough

Dollhouse Bloodshed, another grungy, gritty slasher game from the developer of Floors Have Teeth, isn’t easy to figure out. We can’t blame you for feeling confused when you step out into the house and a screaming creature with an axe chases you down. That’s why after some extensive work fleeing and dying in the house of dolls, we’ve put together this guide on how to play Dollhouse Bloodshed to help you succeed.

How To Play Dollhouse Bloodshed

First we explain some of the mechanics of the game, then at the bottom there’s a step by step walkthrough. You can skip around using the contents table.

The Basics

In Dollhouse Bloodshed, you wake up the a spooky basement, with a mask glued to your face. The basement has some creepy doll-themed decor and you’re pretty sure you’re not safe. You are correct.

Once you get up into the house, you’ll have to contend with a monster running around trying to make sure you can never run around again.

There are a few characters to choose, though they all do pretty much the same thing. It’s an aesthetic choice. (We are afraid of Pickle.)

Controls

The controls are simple enough.

Movement WASD
Interact LMB
Sprint Shift (This consumes stamina.)
Crouch C
Flashlight F
Drop Item Q

The House

The house is your standard haunted mansion, if it was owned by someone really dedicated to upcycling old baby dolls in the worst way possible. You’ll start out on the ground floor, and come to unlock the upper levels by playing.

The place is gloomy, but usually lit up by the uh… delightful doll head lamps scattered around the place. This will change when you hear the clock chiming. When that happens, all the lights go out and you’ll need a flashlight to see. (More on that later.)

You have a health system, and can take progressive damage before you go down. The more hurt you are, the more cracked your screen view looks.

The Mother

Screenshot from Dollhouse Bloodshed. It shows The Mother, an emaciated spindly figure in a dress. Her eyes are glowing. She carries an axe and is approaching the player.

The Mother, a creepy, spindly-limbed lady-thing, patrols the house at random. If you enter her eyeline, she’ll give chase with her big axe, and if she can, swing on you until you’re past caring. One of the main challenges of Dollhouse Bloodshed, especially when playing solo, is trying to avoid The Mother’s attention long enough to progress.

There are a few clues that can help you figure out of she’s nearby.

  • The static in your vision and audio will increase noticeably when The Mother is nearby. (The tricky part is working out where nearby she actually is.)
  • The Mother will open or move doors as she moves around. If you listen carefully you can hear the doors being opened and get some idea of where she is from that.

The Mother can’t get into the Basement (where you start out) so you can use that as a safe room if you’re being chased. You can also outrun her at a sprint and she will de-aggro, but that means finding a rough without hitting a dead end.

Blackouts

Another important factor in how to play Dollhouse Bloodshed: Blackouts. Blackouts can happen at random as you play. You’ll know it’s happening because you’ll hear the clock start chiming midnight, and the lights will go out.

The lack of lights makes it tougher to navigate around the house, and it’s easier to get trapped at a dead end.

Sadly this isn’t the worst part of blackouts. The worst bit is The Child, which we cover in the next section.

The Child

The Child is a secondary monster that appears during Blackouts and a few scripted events in the game. It resembles a small doll-like creature that walks around the house. If The Child sees you it will move in your direction. If it gets close enough, it will start crying. This will attract The Mother directly towards the location… making things very tricky for you.

So you will need to avoid both these monsters while you sneak around. Fortunately, The Child is pretty talkative so you can usually hear him from quite a distance away.

You can take The Child out of play permanently by equipping The Hammer, and from that you’ll get the Baby Head item.

Items

Screenshot from Dollhouse Bloodshed. It shows a player's POV looking into a drawer, where they find a disembodied doll arm.

You can find items around the house. These are normally marked with a white sparkle. (Even if they’re inside draws or cupboards sometimes.) Some of these will help you advance quests, others have more direct and practical uses.

You can only hold one item in your hand at a time. Items you drop wind up on the floor.

  • Bandaid – These will restore your health when you use them. They have one single use.
  • Keys – Open certain doors. Thankfully the key usually says what they open.
  • Doll Limbs – Used for one of the later puzzles found behind the Portrait Puzzle.
  • Baby Head – Used for one of the downstairs puzzles. You get it from The Child.
  • Hammer – Used to pry open the boards blocking the way to the second floor.
  • Plank – Comes from the second floor door. Used to cross the gap on the top floor of the library.
  • Portrait Pieces – Used for the Portrait Puzzle.
  • Giant Eye – Given to the doll in The Attic.
  • Bolt Cutters – You’ll need these to escape.

Now we’ve covered how to play Dollhouse Bloodshed and what you can expect to find, and how to avoid the hazards, let’s explain exactly what you need to do. (While avoiding The Mother and The Child, and fleeing to the basement when you need to.)

  • Make your way out of the Basement. Don’t forget to pick up the Flashlight on the way.
  • Head to the Library and make your way to the back of it on the bottom floor. There you should find the ‘Suspicious Shelf’.
  • Go to the bookshelf to the left of the Suspicious Shelf, and you’ll see a shine. Interact with the shiny book to make the Suspicious Shelf swing open.
  • Enter the secret passage behind the shelf and follow it to the end.
  • You should end up in a freezer. The Hammer is on one of the shelves, pick that up. Then open the exit door to the Kitchen from the freezer side.
  • Head into the entrance lobby, and go up the stairs opposite the door.
  • Use the plank to cross the gap on the top floor of the Library to get the Tea Party Room Key.
  • Head to the second floor.
  • Unlock the Tea Party Room. (We’ll get into that more later.)
  • To get to the Attic Key Room, you need to wait until The Child comes out during a Blackout, and hit it with the Hammer. The head should fall off. Then you can pick up up and add it to the empty place on the head shelf. This makes the cabinet slide, revealing a secret room. The Attic Key is in here.
  • Head up to the Attic and meet the doll here. She wants her eyes back, but you can’t do anything about this now.
  • You can get access to the bathroom with the Bathroom Key. You get this by going to the alcove of creepy dolls on the second floor, and arranging the letter blocks to spell EVA. The box behind them should unlock and you can find the key inside. Unlock the Bathroom on the bottom floor, left of the Basement door. You can also find the Letter Opener there.
  • Use the Letter Opener to try off the mismatched Portrait Piece in the Dining Room, and take it up to the second floor, in the room of mismatched dolls, where you can find a jumbled, incomplete portrait.
  • The other missing piece is on the upper floor of the Library, on the opposite end to the Tea Party Room Key.
  • Once you’ve brought both pieces to the Portrait, turn the squares until you have a full picture. (Two creepy girls holding hands.)
  • The wall should swing out, and you’ll see a limbless doll who wants her limbs back.
    • As of the last update, the limbs are hidden in random areas around the house.
  • Once it has its limbs back, the doll will give you the Toy Key.
  • Take the Toy Key to the area on the second floor with the giant dolls, and use it on the Music Box.
  • The music box should spit out the Exit Key. You can use this to open the front door… but the door is still chained up.
  • Head to the Tea Party Room. From here, you need to find four color-coded roman numerals found around the house.
    • The blue one is in the freezer. (Where you found the hammer.)
    • The yellow one is in the bathroom.
    • The green on is in the TV room.
    • The red one is in the room with the Attic Key.
  • Enter the numbers into the doll clock of the same color on the wall.
  • If you get it right, the cake in the middle should explode, leaving a Giant Eyeball behind.
  • Take the eyeball to the Attic and give it to the giant doll head. The doll will give you Bolt Cutters.
  • Use the Bolt Cutters to cut the chain holding the front door shut.
  • Use the Exit Key on the front door.
  • Leave the house.
