Star Wars: Galactic Racer Dev Says Racing Genre Is "Crying Out" For Fresh Ideas

Late last year, Fuse Games debuted the first look at its debut title, Star Wars: Galactic Racer. The Fuse team includes veterans who have worked on Need for Speed, Burnout, and Star Wars Battlefront. That experience has taught them that the new Star Wars racer had to be more than just a spiritual successor to Star Wars Episode I: Racer.

“Every time we’ve made a game, we’ve tried to innovate,” Fuse Games founder and CEO Matt Webster told The Game Business. “If you sort of zoom out a bit, it’s a genre that’s crying out for some fresh new ideas, and to steal from some other genres as well.”

One of the ways that Galactic Racer will differ from the previous Star Wars racing games is that the races are only part of the experience. Galactic Racer will also allow players to spend time outside of their vehicles and find the stories taking place around them.

“When we’re looking at a racing game, particularly one that we feel is ripe for a bunch of innovation, ‘where do we want to innovate?,'” added Webster. “It’s a Star Wars racing game, so Star Wars fans crave immersion in that galaxy. They crave a story to be told, and characters to fall in love with. And beautiful locations that we know and love. That is a really fertile ground for us when we think about the second-to-second experience, but then more broadly in the sphere of Star Wars storytelling.”

Webster praised Fuse’s collaborators at Lucasfilm, and noted that they helped in the creation of a new vehicle, the Skim Speeder, which will debut in the game.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer will hit Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC later this year. Some of the other Star Wars games in development will take longer to arrive. The recently announced RPG Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is likely years away, although the developer has assured fans it won’t take until 2030. The current status of Star Wars: Eclipse and the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is unknown.
