Square Enix Drops Supernatural Visual Novel PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse

Square Enix is expanding its Paranormasight series with a new game. Titled PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse, it’s a supernatural visual novel now out on mobile. Like its predecessor Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo, it offers multi-perspective storytelling.

What happens in PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse?

The series has explored urban legends and eerie folklore in earlier instalments. This time, everything’s happening in Ise-Shima, Japan. It’s a coastal region long associated with stories of mermaids and maritime myth.

The exact location is the remote island of Kameshima, in Ise bay. At the centre is Yuza Minakuchi, a young pearl diver who spends his days underwater gathering alongside his best friend Azami Kumoi.

One day, their quiet routine takes a disturbing turn when Yuza experiences a bewildering supernatural encounter on the ocean floor. You must be wondering with what. Well, with another version of himself!

Soon after, a string of curses begins to plague the island. New characters start getting involved. They include a girl of unknown origins, a treasure hunter from a foreign land, and a mysterious housewife investigating a drowning.

As their paths intersect, each character approaches the unfolding crisis from a different perspective. Together, they gradually moving closer to the secret of the Mermaids of Ise, a legend obscured by the fog of history for generations.

PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse lets you step into the roles of multiple characters as they deal with their own mysteries. One of the defining features returning in the game is the 360-degree backgrounds. It enables you to examine scenes from all angles in search of clues.

A bittersweet tale set against a backdrop of coastal folklore

Alongside the 360-degree environmental immersion, the game introduces numerous new gameplay mechanics. One of them is a Diving mini-game connected to Yuza’s life as a pearl diver and the maritime setting.
