Riot Games announces 2XKO layoffs

Riot Games has announced it has laid off several staff members working on its fighting game 2XKO.

The developer and publisher of League of Legends and VALORANT revealed that the cuts are part of an effort to focus on development and the title’s competitive plans.

In a blog post published on February 9th, Riot Games stated momentum ‘hasn’t reached the level needed’ to support the current size of the team. As a result, Riot Games has reduced the number of staff working on the fighting game. Whilst announcing the decision, it has not been confirmed how many staff members have been laid off.

Despite asmaller team working on 2XKO, the developer has stated that it is committed to making improvements to the game and resolving issues raised by the community. Moreover, its esports plans will remain intact.

“Our plans for the 2026 Competitive Series are unchanged,” said Tom Cannon, Executive Producer of 2XKO. “We remain committed to partnering with tournament organisers and local communities. Our focus will continue to be on supporting the events and organisers that already power the FGC.”

Globally launched on January 20th, 2026, 2XKO is a two-versus-two fighting game featuring characters from the League of Legends universe. Last month, Riot Games unveiled the title’s competitive calendar to cement its presence at several high-profile events throughout the year. 

According to the company, those impacted by the layoffs will have the option to explore opportunities within Riot Games. Workers who have been let go will receive six months of notice pay and severance.

“Ultimately, this decision reflects a shift in how we operate,” added Cannon. “This isn’t a judgment on individual Rioters or a signal that the journey is over. We’re reshaping the team to give 2XKO a more sustainable path forward.”

Over the last 12 months, layoffs have impacted several areas of the esports industry. In October, tournament organiser ESL FACEIT Group underwent layoffs as part of strategic realignment efforts designed to ensure sustainable growth.

September 2025 saw North American organisation 100 Thieves undergo layoffs, sparking community backlash due to the cuts coinciding with Matt ‘Nadeshot‘ Haag participating in sponsored gambling streams.
