Social VR Platform Rec Room Is Shutting Down by the End of This Quarter

Social VR platform Rec Room is shutting down permanently after 10 years of its launch. Over its lifetime, the platform reached 150 million players. Users collectively spent an estimated 68,000 years inside its virtual spaces, playing games, socialising, and building their own experiences.

So, when is Rec Room shutting down?

Rec Room is shutting down on June 1st, 2026. Ironically, it coincides with the game’s 10th anniversary. From that date onwards, you’ll no longer be able to log in or play Rec Room, and the rec.net website will go offline.

As of now, you can’t create new accounts, add new friends, or sign up for Rec Room+ subscriptions. Existing RR+ memberships will remain active until June 1st, and the RR+ requirement for Partnered Creator status has been removed, so anyone with sufficient tokens can cash them out.

However, new registrations for Partnered Creator will stop on May 1st. Also, gift cards won’t be redeemable for tokens from May 1st. After May 18th, creators won’t be able to earn tokens. Players will still be able to spend any remaining tokens until June 1st.

Developed by Against Gravity, Rec Room was the Roblox for VR. It had a heavy focus on user-generated content, social VR spaces and minigames. Now, you must be wondering why Rec Room is shutting down.

Despite the large user base, the developers admitted that the platform never managed to become sustainably profitable. Apparently, the costs consistently outweighed revenue, and the path to profitability became too difficult to maintain.

As part of the shutdown, the developers announced discounts on first-party content across all stores, with prices slashed by 80%. Some features that were previously exclusive to RR+, such as avatar items, custom emoji, auras, and body paint, now don’t require the subscription.
