How To Play Survive The Cold On Roblox – A Beginner’s Guide

We’ve been playing some Survive The Cold lately, and it’s a solid survival game… but we can forgive you if you’re overwhelmed when you start. It sort of drops you in it. So, we’ve put together this beginner’s guide on how to play Survive The The Cold on Roblox.

How To Play Roblox Survive The Cold On Roblox

The Basics

When you start Survive The Cold you begin the game alone, in a wintery forest. It’s extremely cold, and there’s a bar on the right of the screen rising menacingly. You need to get moving quickly.

The goal of Survive The Cold is in the name. You need to find a way to survive and thrive in the hostile wilderness by finding fuel, crafting new gear, and increasingly the distance you can go without freezing.

Controls

First step is getting to grips with the control scheme.

Move WASD
Use Tool Left Mouse
Interact E
Store Items (At Crafting Table) F
Sprint (Uses Stamina) Shift
Equip Item From Hotbar 1-9
Drop Item G

How Not To Freeze

If you’re outside in the cold, the cold bar on the right of the screen will gradually start to fill up. This is a bad thing. If it gets to the top, you’re going to freeze. Keeping this down is one of the major mechanics of Survive The Cold.

There are two ways to lower the bar:

  • Campfires. These are static fires that you can stoke up be adding branches. Each branch added increases the duration of the fire by 30 seconds. If a fire goes out, adding more fuel will start it up again instantly. You’ll find one of these in the middle of your house, and you’ll need to keep it stoked when things get cold.
  • Torches. These are your go-to heat source when you’re out and about. Holding one will decrease your freeze bar. Held torches (aside from the unlimited torch item) will deplete as you use them. You can also craft placeable torches when you get the Level 2 Crafting Bench.

Your House

Following the arrows will eventually lead you to an abandoned house, which you’ll need to defrost by lighting up the campfire in the middle. Once you’ve done that, the house is yours. Who was using it before? Don’t worry about it. They’re probably fine.

You can place furniture here, do crafting, even house pets, but most importantly, you can use this place to shelter and warm up during Snowstorms.

Storms

Snowstorms happen every few minutes. These are events where the outside becomes extremely cold.

Your freeze bar will rise extremely quickly outside. It will also begin to rise inside the house, unless your campfire is lit and fuelled.

During the storm, there’s also a chance that your house will take damage and develop a hole in the wall. This will decrease the internal temperature of the house until it’s fixed by applying a Plank to the hole and holding Interact to fix it.

Gathering

One of the things you’ll spend a lot of time on in Survive The Cold is gathering resources. This means braving the cold and searching around for resource nodes you can loot.

  • Dead Shrubs – You can stomp these bundles of dead twigs to get branches.
  • Bushes – Small shrubs you can shred to get fiber.
  • Snow – You can root round in highlighted patches of snow to get rocks.
  • Chests – Check around old campsites to find chests sitting around. They’ll often contain food.

Crafting

A screenshot of the crafting bench in Survive The Cold. It looks like a red bench with tools and storage boxes around it. It's inside a log cabin.

In the house you should find a Crafting Bench. With this, you can craft items that will help you survive.

It’s a multi-step process, so let’s explain.

  1. Add materials.

Hit F in front of the Crafting Bench to open the material store window. Form here you can select the material you want to store and hit ‘Deposit One’ which will add one to the Crafting Table, or ‘Deposit All’ which will add all the material in your inventory to the storage.

  2. Open the crafting menu.

Exit the storage window and interact with E to open the crafting menu.

  3. Select what you want to craft.

Pick from the list in the crafting menu. It’s divided into sections depending on the level of the crafting bench, you can build more advanced upgraded versions to get more recipes.

  4. Craft it.

Hit ‘Create’ below the selected recipe. If you have the right materials in the craft storage, this should work and should send the item straight to your inventory. (If held.)

Food

After you’ve advanced a little way into the game, the Hunger bar will appear on the right of the screen next to the Freeze bar. You’ll need to regularly consume food to keep the bar up to stay alive. You can get food from the Food Shop, and chests.

Relics

Relics are important items you need to find in-game. Collecting them helps you progress and unlock things like the upper floor of your house. Perhaps even better, they will also decrease the power of the snowstorms, making life easier overall.

When a Relic spawns, you’ll get a notification on screen that says so. When this happens, go to the map board outside your house and interact with it. A direction arrow and distance should appear. Head in that direction to find the Relic. (Though make sure you have some torches on hand so you can make it there and back.)

Shops

While they’re called ‘Shops’, the stores in this game don’t really need you to ‘buy’ things. Instead they have respawning loot at replenishes regularly. You just have to go out and get it. The catch? They’re quite a long walk from your house, and in a colder area, so you will need to stock up on torches, and time around snowstorms, to get back in time.

There are currently three shops:

  • Food Shop – This has respawning cans of food.
  • Clothes Shop – This has outfits, which protect you from the cold and decrease the speed your freeze bar rises.
  • Furniture Shop – This contains stuff you can use for your home.

Pets

Occasionally you’ll get a notification that a pet has spawned in the forest somewhere. You can see their location highlighted outside if they’re closeby. Pets may become frozen, and encased in ice. You’ll have to go out, fetch the pet and bring it back to your house. Frozen pets will thaw if places next to a lit for for a few minutes.

Pets are adorable, but they also have some practical uses. Each pet you have you gives a passive buff to your stats… so you really should pick these up when you get the chance.
