Beyond The Pixels’ Bullet Hell Shooter Astro Burn Gets a Huge Revamp!

Beyond The Pixels is a London-based studio focused on reworking retro ideas for new players. Announced last year, its debut project has apparently undergone a notable transformation already. Keep reading all about Beyond The Pixels’ first-ever title, Astro Burn.

What started as a retro shooter is now a full 16-bit style cute-’em-up!

The studio has increased the number of adorable animals on screen. They’re leaning further into classic arcade aesthetics. The team is also preparing to launch a Kickstarter campaign, with the goal of bringing Astro Burn to a physical format through a collectible 16-bit style USB cartridge.

The game first released a demo in September 2025, introducing Astro the space cat as the central character in a frantic shooter. The demo launched on Steam, where a large number of players tested it and shared feedback. That response became a key influence on the recent developments.

Game creator HaZ Dulull explained that players wanted more personality, more animals and more light-hearted fun. As a result, the original concept was reworked and Beyond The Pixels’ Astro Burn was rebuilt into a 16-bit style cute-’em-up (whatever that means).

Alongside the visual shift, the game has gained new mechanics and content. There are additional power-ups, such as Catnip Power moves. Also, the team has added a local two-player co-op option that allows two players to tackle the action together.

Players who tried the original 2025 demo, as well as those completely new to the project, can now download the all-new demo on Steam. Meanwhile, plans are in motion to expand Astro Burn into a broader brand, with merchandise, collectibles and cross-media.
