Two-Player Word Game New York Times Crossplay: Play and Spell Launches on Android

The New York Times has added another entry to its growing NYT Games lineup with NYT Crossplay: Play and Spell. It’s a two-player word game with turn-based competition and social interaction. The game fits into a long history of word and logic games from NYT, both for print and digital platforms.

New York Times Crossplay: Play and Spell is now available

Players taking turns placing letter tiles on a shared board. They build words off one another to earn points, while keeping their own set of letters hidden from their opponent.

Each player starts with 7 letters, and every time they place a tile, it’s replaced from a finite tile bag. Scoring depends both on the rarity of the letter used and where the resulting word sits on the board. Yeah, just like Scrabble.

Once the tile bag runs empty, both players get one final round before the match concludes. Any leftover tiles at the end are not counted against either player. So, the winner is simply the one with the highest score.

New York Times Crossplay includes a leaderboard tracks friendly competition. It also offers in-game chats so that players can exchange strategies or casual banter during matches. After every two-player game, you can get feedback through the Cross Bot.

Crossplay supports matches against friends, family, or matched opponents of similar skill. You can also play against a digitally-generated opponent for solo play. Games played against the digitally-generated opponent, however, are not saved across devices and are not recorded in player stats.

You can also explore other things, like a word of the day along with a built-in dictionary. Match history is available for review, allowing you to look back at previous moves and decisions. New York Times Crossplay is free to play, so check it out on the Google Play Store.
