PlayVS joins forces with Theta Labs to launch AI-powered agent

Amateur esports platform PlayVS has announced a partnership with decentralised cloud infrastructure provider Theta Labs to launch an AI-powered agent focused on collegiate esports.

Known as the PCL Bot, the agent will support the PlayVS College League (PGL), one of North America’s largest collegiate esports leagues.

According to PlayVS, the PCL Bot will serve over 10,000 collegiate esports players and the wider community with access to information ranging from match schedules to tournament-specific rulings.

In addition to queries, the agent will also help users inquire about how colleges can become members of the league, along with assisting brands interested in becoming a sponsor. The new system will be trained using the PCL’s league handbook and tournament rulebook to ensure accurate information is provided.

“Integrating this AI agent into the PlayVS College League represents a major step forward in how we support our players and the broader collegiate esports community,” said Charles O’Donnell, Senior Director of Collegiate Esports at PlayVS. “It will streamline league operations, reduce friction, and create a more consistent competitive experience for every participant in the PCL.”

Launched in 2025, the PCL features over 1,000 campuses in the United States competing across over 17 games with the aim of being as accessible as possible. Titles include Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, and Hearthstone.

The collaboration with Theta Labs marks PlayVS’s first partnership of 2026, joining an expanding list of partners. In September 2025, it joined forces with Tottenham Hotspur to launch an initiative using esports to boost fan engagement.

In recent years, Theta Labs has continued collaborating with several esports organisations to integrate AI into a range of engagement tools. The provider has partnered with the likes of Team Heretics and 100 Thieves to launch dedicated chatbots to provide fans with real-time match analysis and statistics.

Expanding into collegiate esports is a new avenue for the provider, which continues to integrate AI into tools designed to enhance fan experience and to streamline processes.
