Firefox Launches Digital Version of Card Game Data War aka Billionaire Blast Off

Mozilla Firefox has released a new video game called Data War. A browser-based game, it’s part of the Billionaire Blast Off campaign, which offered an interactive experience at TwitchCon 2025. Attendees were able to play it in person and walk away with a physical edition that was only available at the convention.

The free-to-play title takes aim at how personal information is treated online. Players take control of one of six billionaires, each chasing the extravagant ambition of reaching space. The only way to get there is by siphoning resources from the public.

The concept actually reflects how Firefox positions itself. The browser is not backed by billionaires and has spent more than two decades focusing on creativity, independence, and trust. Firefox Data War does the same by turning data into the game’s core currency and framing power as something players fight over directly.

Matches revolve around defending your own data, disrupting rivals, and ultimately deciding which billionaire earns a one-way trip into space. It’s satirical, using exaggeration and chaos to point at the often hidden business of personal data and to suggest that users still have agency in how that data is handled.

Billionaires treat personal data like a game

That’s what Firefox Data War takes a dig at. Gameplay borrows from familiar foundations, playing similarly to Classic War (card game). But here, you get the additional ability to chain effects from unique cards. It thus offers unpredictable shifts, sudden reversals, and endings that rarely play out the same way twice.

Meanwhile, the browser turned 21 in November 2025. It marked two decades of development focused on an open web. That anniversary was part of the reason Mozilla chose TwitchCon as the place to unveil Data War, the new card game.
