These events play a crucial part in GeoGuessr’s esports ecosystem, with the winners of these competitions earning significant World League points. These points help increase a player’s chance to secure a spot in the 2025 World Cup Finals. Taking place May 18th, 2025, the APAC Major will be located inside Japan’s Tokyo Tower and will feature the World League’s top six APAC players. Alongside securing points, players will also compete for its $17,500 (~£14,000) prize pool. The Americas Major will be situated within the DreamHack Dallas gaming and esports festival from May 23rd to 25th. Once again, it will feature the region’s top six GeoGuessr players and a $17,500 prize pool. Finally, the EMEA Major will occur at a new gaming and LAN festival called Glitched. Launched last year by a group of former DreamHack business heads, Glitched is hosting its first LAN event from June 13th to 16th at the Elmia Exhibition and Convention Centre in Jönköping, Sweden. Unlike the previous two Majors, the EMEA competition will feature 12 World League players from the region and a $25,000 (~£20,000) prize pool. Winners of the regional Majors will receive 40 World League points, with second and third place receiving 25 and 15 points, respectively. Alongside GeoGuessr’s regional Majors is the Open Major which will take place online from June 27th-29th. This event includes the top 16 World League players who failed to qualify for the World Cup, alongside 16 players from outside the league. This year’s GeoGuessr World Cup Finals host has already been revealed with 16 players heading to the KB Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark for its $100,000 (~£80,400) prize pool. In total, 12 players will qualify through their World League standings, with three slots going to the winners of Wildcard events. The winner of the Open Major earns the final spot in the World Cup Finals. The geography-based guessing game has gone on to create a fully fledged esports ecosystem following its rise in prominence over the last few years. The 2024 GeoGuessr World Cup recorded a peak viewership of 254,000. This is more than three times the amount its inaugural edition received in 2023.
