One of the new challenges added to Dead Rails confronts you with the scariest scenario yet. Not zombies, not werewolves but… being broke. The horror! The Dead Rails Fistful Of Dollars challenge is a tricky one, and we’ve put together a guide to give our advice on how to get through it and live to collect your rewards at the end.

Dead Rails is a game on Roblox. If you’re interested in all the new stuff added to the game, try out Dead Rails update guide too.

Dead Rails Fistful Of Dollars Challenge Guide

We’ve broken up the guide into a few different topics.

What Is The Challenge?

The Fistful Of Dollars challenge is pretty simple in concept. You need to complete the game without selling anything. This means you effectively cannot earn any money in a run.

Completing the challenge rewards you with:

Fistful Of Dollars Strats

So the idea is simple, but actually doing it is pretty complicated. As you’re barred from earning any money at all, more or less. You have the $20 you start with and that’s it. So let’s talk about what that means, and how to deal with it.

Fuel

Without money, you can’t buy coal for fuel. This is a bigger problem early on, as you won’t have much fuel to start with. You can mitigate this with several of the classes:

  • Miners start with two coal, which should get you most of the way to the first fort, and almost certainly to a building you can loot for more fuel items.
  • Cowboys start with a horse, letting you ride out to find fuel. (Or do a Pony Express run at the same time if you’re feeling lucky.)
  • Vampires can outrun horses, so can progress on their own, particularly at night. (Though as you can’t buy bandages or Snake Oil, this is a risky strat.)

Werewolves can also cover a lot of ground for fuel after dark, though they’re slow during the day.

Ammo

As you can’t buy weapons or ammo, you need to be very careful how you approach fights, because you’ll need to loot all the ammo for firearms, and you can’t be sure how much you can find. There are a few ways around this.

  • Classes with a strong melee like the Vampire can be a good option to deal with this problem.
  • Some classes like the Cowboy can spawn with guns, but the ammo is fairly limited.
  • Outlaw camps are good spots to loot for ammo, with that and weapons often lying around.
  • Make use of the fort turrets to conserve your own ammunition, kite enemies over if necessary.
  • Classes like Necromancer and Packmaster can deal damage with minions without risking themselves, making them well suited.

Looting

Looting is a lot more important if you’re attempting the challenge, as it will be your only source of fuel.

  • Bandit camps are a great source of ammo, weapons and generally useful items, these are often unguarded, or have minimal enemies present.
  • Enemy-filled structures like the Castle or Sterling Mines are not recommended unless you have a class fast enough to outrun attacked.
  • Doctors Offices are a good source of bandages, and possibly even Snake Oil.
  • If you don’t assemble Tesla, the Tesla Lab is usually free of enemies and usually has several fuel items you can loot.

Defenses

You can’t buy metal plates or barbed wire for your train, so you may need to improvise.

  • Take the newspapers in the starting town, and look out for more lying around. They don’t work too well for fuel, but you can use them to block off the train pretty well.
  • Most items can potentially stop bullets when welded.
  • Bandit Camps often have armor pieces.
